All I want is to sit by a lake… without Matt and Steph for just one day
However being on the Run for One Planet road team………..on our days off it has generally rained so I end up being attached to Matt and Steph’s hip in an internet café and all I really wish for is to sit at one of the beautiful lakes in the Ontario Provincial Parks without Matt or Steph for just a couple hours but there is normally no cell or internet service at the parks we’re staying at and we have to drive to the nearest town which also means the RV will not be staying at the campground.
I’m going to go through a typical Run for One Planet road team day…….so all you readers out there can see what its like and how comical it can get……..yesterday was pretty typical 5:10am Matt is the first one up and wakes us both up grinding his coffee beans………we need to start early because there is a team call at 8pm and we have to make up mileage from a few day ago to get to Sault Ste Marie in time for Tuesday. 5:45am pick up the laundry, Matt and Steph have showers and I’m too lazy and tired to get out of bed even though its my third day without a shower(we can get rather stinky around here)…..7am on the road with Matt starting his run. Yesterday we were all pretty tired so Steph and I slept between all the 10km pulls. Matt however is normally in the RV on his own so he can’t sleep (Matt wanted me to tell everyone that). We were a little short on the mileage at the end of the day (around 6pm) so I get Matt and Steph to do some mileage at the same time…. whohoo I’m in the RV on my own……its now 7:15pm and we’re finished at 83.8km for the day.
There wasn’t enough time to do the grocery shopping (as always) in Wawa so off to the campsite we go (Rabbit Blanket Provincial Park). Back to the campsite for 7:30pm….remember we have a group meeting at 8pm…..needed to cook dinner so we quickly get to that. At 7:55pm I tried the cell phone….oh my god we don’t have cell service or blackberry service so off we plug from the water etc and out onto the main highway we go driving to find a pocket of cell service, it was actually quite comical because the dinner is half made on the stove and someone has to watch it and stand right by it (we’ve been known to have food flying if it wasn’t secured) Steph was on both phones trying to get service and finally Matt driving as slow as possible waiting for the “Here we go….STOP…..we have service”. Finally at 8:25pm service was found and Matt and Steph are standing in the middle of the RV because that is the only place they have cell service and we’re perched on the side of the highway about 5km from our campsite. I thought it was so funny I started to video tape and backed up into the shower where we have a shower full of recycling because there hasn’t been recycling for paper or plastic in over two weeks.
All I wanted to do last night was to eat, feed the runners just maybe as they were actually sitting, have a shower at the campsite and do some dishes while Matt and Steph were on the phone but being so far away from the campsite we didn’t have water and no reserve left in our tank. So this morning at 9am we still have dirty dishes and we have to drive back into Wawa to get water and internet and cell service. And we can’t forget those lovely mosquitoes, quick into the RV so we don’t get bitten!!!!!!
Welcome to the average day in the life of the road team for Run for One Planet.
