Green Running to Mexico and chasing down the U.P.S. Van!
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!
That was the scene yesterday in El Paso as we chased down the United Parcel Service van, which had a package of vitamins from our most trusted source for all things Chiropractic and nutrition, Don Grant and Associates in Vancouver! Thanks Don and Marriann for going the distance to ensure we received our valuable care package.
It also had us running from George and Marlene’s BnB, “Casa de Sueno’s” from 2 nights of pure southwest relaxation in the desert. We were so close, we even ran all the way to Mexico, as their place was only 6 miles from the border. R41P touches another country (ok, we peeked through the fence right at the line). It was really cool though and we made it to another “mile 0!”
To St. Marks school (who we had a great event with the day before), to head off the vitamin shipment as we’d missed it once before and weren’t going to let that happen again. Steph and Amber saw the recognizable brown van with the UPS logo as he deeked left and headed into a neighborhood. So Steph fired up “Racey Verna” and took off after him. She caught him and gave him the story of our missed pick up. He didn’t posses it but called into headquarters and made plans for us to go to the airport and pick it up! So off we went through Friday afternoon traffic, in search of our most valued package.
With package in hand, we bid farewell to this fine southwest city, where we had an amazing event at Bridges Academy, another school for kids with Dyslexia, and a fond farewell with our friends to the south, Mexico, hugging the river. The only bummer was hearing how much violence is going on in Juarez, Mexico, the city across the river from El Paso. A poor economy and drug wars have made this city, a war zone. It was shocking to look to one side, El Paso and see abundance. And then look to the other side, Juarez and see 3rd world conditions, with only a small river and a fence dividing this reality.
So after taking the scenic route through the mountains, we eventually ended up back in Las Cruces at Dream Catcher Inn to cook Anita and Ken dinner and spend a really fun evening discussing life, the tour and hang out with their dogs, their cats and 2 parrots!
Southwest hospitality is alive and well, green running is back in action and we have 12 weeks remaining folks here on the Run For One Planet highway!
Yeah, Juarez is in really bad shape. It’s been like that for a few years. Scenic drive through the mountains???? What High way ??? Back through Alamagordo?
