Art has a powerful ability to raise emotions and affect our decisions. The video above is from the 70’s and it still makes a powerful point today. When I started thinking about art I thought about it from a couple of point of views. Those that make art to draw our attention to an environmental issue. Art made from recycled material and kids environmental artwork.
Someone once said that a picture is worth a thousand words. The art work of Chris Jordan really shows the scary numbers.(source) Warning some images are not kid appropriate. The platic cup and the plasic bottles ones where my favorites in a scary way. Poetry can also bring up vivid images, as seen in ‘Beached Trees’ , previously seen on the blog. Its amazing how how few words can say so much.(source)
San Francisco Recycling and Disposal has an artist in residence program that allows the artist access to a studio 24 hours a day and access to the garbage stream and a monthly stipend. They have a sculpture garden located at one of the disposal facilities. They have images of their art work on the site.(source)
Asking kids to make something out of recycled material is always an interesting experiment. My sons house (dishwasher box) has solar panels (egg cartons), wiring (string) and I don’t remember the rest and it changes almost daily. Toilet paper rolls are a prized possession, telescope, rocket, hot wheels tunnel and many more.
