California Camping….water front baby!
We slept to the sounds of surf curling the shoreline 50 feet away and are about to start Tour day #312.
Here we are in Playa del Ray, the ONLY one night RV capable campground not dedicated to year long lease along this southern California coastline. I guess like everything else, if it wasn’t put in a long time ago, it’s gone now and no more room to put an overnighter spot in your campsite. At least that’s what the gal at the Chamber of Commerce told me on the phone yesterday as we were madly trying to book a night’s camping.
Our piece of California pie sits just under the flight path to LAX and we went to sleep to the lullaby of Jets landing and taking off. And right at 6am, awoke to the sounds of jets landing and taking off. Paradise baby!
Our last few days have been full of completed marathons and taking in the immense beauty along the shores of this section between San Diego and Long Beach. We hadn’t been stopped in our tracks from jaw dropping beauty since Christmas when we first sighted Pensacola Beach, Florida. Imagine a rain forest at the edge of the ocean and you’ll get a glimpse of what we ran along above the water below. The magic setting was just south of Laguna Beach and we came upon it us as we rounded a corner. Coming complete with a curling cove, Pelicans in formation like big world war 2 bomber planes (we were praying no bird bombs would launch) and the expanse of blue Pacific displaying multi colored hues of blue in the sun. California running at it’s finest!
We even got to hang out with our good friend, Greg Hendrickson (our Watch My Race & Cell sponsor) and his lovely gal, Denise (and not to forget, Jackson, their 3-year old Golden Retriever). Greg was very lucky (and I mean lucky) to have only sustained a very bad cracked Pelvis in a bike accident the week before. As he explained, if he’d landed any differently, it would have meant a long hospital stay, lots of pins and rods in his Pelvis, and not just months of pain and rehab at home. We’re sorry you had to endure this Greg, but very relieved to know you have an amazing partner in Denise and are on the mend. We’ll see you out racing again very soon my friend!
So today, we run (again) and are pumped with anticipation on what is still to come along this Run For One Planet highway! I even got to hang with my best buddy in the whole world, Chad last night and celebrate being a “good Canadian kid”, by way of going to the Canucks and L.A. Kings game. Talk about stimulation overload! The Staples Center is huge with so many people in one spot, lights and sound coming in at 90 miles an hour, I thought we were watching from Time Square! Unfortunately we lost, but it was worth it getting to hang out with my bud and capture some Canadian made action on ice, here in glitzy L.A. baby!
