For the average person, running a marathon might be a lifetime fitness goal. For two guests of the Lower School last week, running that distance is a part of everyday life. They run the equivalent of a marathon, over 26 miles, every single day. Why would they do that? Isn’t it just easier to hop in the car and drive wherever they want to go?
For Matt Hill and Stephanie Tait from British Columbia, Canada, running brings attention to a cause close to their hearts; the environment. They started the organization Run For 1 Planet, trying to start a chain reaction of good environmental deeds all over North America. They began their journey in May by running across southern Canada, down the east coast of the US to Charleston and they will continue around the US making it back home after a year of running. Charleston falls at about mile 5800 of the eventual 11,000 miles for the dynamic duo. In cities along their route, they stop at schools, Whole Food Markets, radio and television stations, and civic organizations to spread the word about conservation and environmental awareness.
Grabbing our students’ attention was easy, because Matt Hill supplies the voice for one of their favorite cartoon characters. When he is not running, he plays Ed on Ed, Edd ‘N Eddy on the Cartoon Network.
They gave a high-energy presentation to our students about becoming more responsible when it comes to their environmental habits. Students were encouraged to conserve water, reuse, and recycle, cut electric usage, among other things to ensure that our planet has a brighter future. Students were asked to make a commitment to change one thing about their lives that will help the environment. Hill and Tait are hoping that they will collect over one million commitments during their journey, starting a revolution one person at a time.
