Deciding a week ago on a rainy, windy day in Regina, to “bust our humps” 7 days in a row to make Winnipeg for our events with 2 schools, Breakfast Television, Vita Health Fresh Market and Lululemon, it gives me much pleasure to say… we made it folks! We must also add, that it was after 3 very restful nights at the Radisson Hotel Saskatchewan (courtesy of our friends at QMFM in Vancouver) Thanks so much Peter!
I am so proud of my most favorite partner in crime Steph and our amazing Road Manager, Vanessa, for putting it all on the line, digging deep and running their (and my) proverbial runners off to be met by the “drinking club with a running problem”, The Hash House Harriers, later this afternoon, and be run into Winnipeg with typical Prairie pride.
It’s amazing how much more one can do if one sets a target to get there and commits fully to its outcome. We proved it to ourselves by upping our mileage for 4 days to 100kms a day, and then 76 – 80kms for the final days (thunder and lightening included!).
As you can see, my toes are very grateful to know that Fed/Ex FINALLY delivered on time which means, 4 new pairs of ASICS are awaiting their arrival for Monday’s run and beyond!
Steph ran strong and kept a steady pace (except for the end of day 5 when she raced to catch me, which she did from ½ a mile back). Her indomitable spirit inspires me (even though she paid for it the next day with dead leg syndrome). In the end, she knew what she had to do to get it done and that meant, keeping her head down, going slow, and just getting it done one mile at a time. She summed it all up perfectly as she departed for another pull just a minute ago: “Thank God for 3 rest days”. I think she also had another half pound of Brie Cheese in her hand (just to keep her calories up for the day). As we enter Winnipeg, Steph has her beloved back… Words right from the worm’s mouth herself: “Happiness is…..the Blackberry!”
Vanessa kept her close and motherly watch on us for sudden mood swings or inability to form proper sentences by administering fat and protein “stat”. Then she would look at her watch and tell us to,
“get out of the RV and run before this day lasts until tomorrow”! We love you Lady Vanilla! You keep us on time (as best you can), watered, fed, and add so much to our Road Team! You’re the wind beneath our feet
From Vanessa:
Matt’s enduring strength over the past 624kms has been unwavering and I think, “holy he’s done the runs on borrowed time from some old running shoes.” It makes my admiration for my cousin even more. He’s as solid as a rock and has proved to me that as long as there is a wind along with the heat the mood swings won’t be as sudden (thank you). Steph and I think his feet are disgusting. Look at the photo above! Do you know how many pictures we had to take to get the perfect angle on that one?! After all that mileage, we’re really happy he’s getting his new shoes this weekend too.
So there it is. Team Run For One Planet makes “the Peg” and is one step, one marathon and one day closer to….the next step, the next marathon, the next….you get the picture.
3 days, a few beers, showers, laundry and we’ll see you out there on the pavement somewhere!
V, Steph and Matt
Their founding principle is simple: To raise the profile of green career opportunities by offering a leading , professional and affordable service.
It began with a simple monster-sized concept: Build Canada’s first dedicated professional-level green job site. And always keep posting rates affordable. The latter was especially important. Unlike other career sites, charging hundreds of dollars to post a single job was simply not an option. Why? Because, as conservationists themselves, they fully understand that money doesn’t grow on trees. By having affordable posting rates, they ensure their clients save more resources for what matters: environmental work.
WorkCabin was founded in April 2007 and officially launched last September. In this era of a plethora of North American or global job sites all touting themselves as green or environmental, WorkCabin stands out as unique. Foremost, it was built by conservationists in Canada’s ecologically rich Carolinian Zone who saw a genuine need to invest in the creation of the first nationwide job site of its kind.
The commitment to be unique goes even further. WorkCabin is Canada’s first job site to be bullfrogpowered with 100 per cent green electricity. They use Bullfrog Power because it’s EcoLogo certified by the federal government. It’s a commitment on their part to use responsible and ethical sources. WorkCabin is also the first job site to be approved as a member of internationally acclaimed 1% For The Planet.
You won’t find just any jobs at WorkCabin. Their clients include some of Canada’s premiere environmental organizations and companies. Together, they’re growing a resource for meaningful employment opportunities for all levels of job seekers.
