Snow in front, snow behind
As we left Boston yesterday under sunny skies after a night of flood worthy rains, we heard of this thing called snow falling in NY and just above us, back in New Hampshire. So we’re wondering, are the god’s of weather smiling on us and keeping it away until we reach more southern climes, or are they about to slam us in the perfect storm from behind and in front?
Guess we’ll know soon as we keep running.
In any case, we said a farewell to Boston, home of The Sox, The Bruins and a really cool and history filled city, again, complete with amazing folks. From the entry point on the 27th, and 2 1/2 hours worth of driving to get 4 miles as a result of no g.p.s. from our continuing dead coach batteries issue, we finally met up with local hero, Mariel Boomgardt. She is our Canadian friend we met back in Ottawa who’d taken it upon herself to organize a run into Boston U with friends both rower and swimmer alike. We even got a quick and awesome reunion with Vanessa and her mom Jane at the RV as we dashed out for quick hellos and pictures. We miss you V!
Simon took the helm parking the mothership in downtown Boston streets, while Steph and I ran the 5km’s onto an amazing campus, especially for the sports student (or sports fan like me). Unbelievable sports program here at B.U. Huge playing field for soccer, rugby and grass hockey lit up like a professional stadium. Our scheduled talk was brought from the conference room to the “eating palace” as I will call it, as that’s what it was, a cafeteria with so many eating stations I felt like a fat kid at a wedding. Or maybe it was just because we were all pretty hungry after our 2 hour adventures in being lost over Boston bridges and tunnels (which after 911 I had to convince the friendly man at the booth we weren’t terrorists in order to pass because of the RV’s propane tanks). Thanks Dan in the booth for your trust.
Back to Mariel. our enthusiastic host, who’d also galvanized a friendly group of girls from her rowing team, who had an international flavour by way of Britain, Australia and Ohio. Thanks for your hospitality girls and the chance for us to speak with you all about our cause! Thanks too for finding Simon, lost from his parking adventure and bringing him home to eat!
Our stop in this incredible eastern city was tour message strengthened with another presentation at “Gate of Heaven Elementary School” with Sister Pat McCarthy and another great group of kids! Steph and I had a blast bringing my voice character, Ed from Ed Edd and Eddy into the mix. Who ever thought cartoons could help spread our message. Thanks kids for your eagerness and to Sister Pat, for your hospitality.
The tour stop was rounded out that night with another event evening with LULULEMON and a really friendly and supportive group of our fellow North Americans, all wanting to make a difference for a healthier world. Thanks to Gretchen, Karen and all the rest for an intimate gathering which inspired us to keep running (as we listened to the rain pour down doing yoga).
A tour stop wouldn’t be complete without a good night’s rest. In that department we found and were supported with 2 nights to lay our heads at a family camping ground (originally established in the sixteen hundreds) called, “Normandy Farms Family Resort”. Thanks folks, we wish we would have actually met you but I’m sure you wouldn’t appreciate our twice midnight arrival with a knock at your door.
So long Boston., best of luck next year with your beloved Sox. I’m still a Canucks fan through and through so the Bruins are on their own.
