Interviews in Maine!
And the interviews continue on the other side of the border. Here’s Matt interviewing with News 8 WMTW at 6:00 in Biddeford (ME). We also got the front page with the Journal Tribune in Biddeford!

This blog comes to you by way of a KOA in the woods just outside Portland, Maine. Simon, our intrepid new road manager secured a warm shower, electricity for our RV (which is needing some extra now that the sun isn’t as strong against the solar panels) and a friendly Saturday pancake breakfast! We decided to take the hospitality and double up our mileage today, as the sun now also sets right about 6pm and that makes for pretty dark running after that time.
So, we are running south along US route 1 still and knowing that every step gets us further south and closer to warmer climes (which Steph loves). The fall leaves and 17th, 18 century houses and building continue to stop us in our tracks for another photo op. Yesterday I started my 1st of the day under brilliant blue skies after a jaw dropping East Coast sunrise, and the mercury dipping below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Hey, it even snowed just up the road from where we’d crossed over a few days previous. Six inches and winter’s a comin’ folks!
We are inspired by the beauty and hospitality of this part of America and continue to work hard booking school events and media interviews to get the message out, six miles at a time.
Please take the time to do one new thing differently for the health of our amazing Planet. She provides so much for us it’s crazy. If we all did one thing differently all those small steps start to really add up. I know, sorry for the motto plug but that is the truth of it.
Be your own local hero, you will inspire so many around you.
From the KOA in Maine, we say have a great weekend! Now, gotta wake the troops (Simon and Steph) for some down home breakfast…….
Wow it’s been almost 6 months on the road with Run for One Planet. I’ve seen all of Canada and what a beautiful country we live in. It reminds me to look after it and do a lot of what Matt and Steph are inspiring people to do. Once I get home I’m going to commit to using a mug and water bottle whenever I get water or a hot drink, I will always use reusable bags, I will reduce (seriously Steph I will commit to this one), I will think twice about the consequences of what my actions are doing to the environment and I really want to start a compost.
We are now into Maine where I will be getting off the bus in two days and handing the reigns onto Simon. I’m feeling a little reminiscent but also am excited to be going onto another adventure. I’m thinking of the many people that have touched me through their generosity, inspiration, encouragement, excitement and wisdom. There are so many amazing people I’ve met, too many to mention, but you all hold a special part in my life.
We left St. John on October 16th where we were staying with the very welcoming Barb and Randy Erkstrom and the rest of their family. We had a great night there filled with amazing food, great company and they made us feel just like family. Thank you so much and I look forward to seeing all the Orchard’s in BC next summer for a very special friends wedding.
So, Matt and Steph as I say adieu. Thank you for all the memories. Sure there have been tough days and very long days, but there have also been fun days, short days and inspiring days. You guys rock and I’m so very proud of what you are doing out here taking one step at a time and inspiring people one person at a time. My memories will last a lifetime, thank you so much for that! I love you guys and go out and rock the USA.
Yes folks, we ran our last complete marathons out of Canada almost 6 days ago now and entered America via Calais, Maine. And can you believe it, it was the fastest and friendliest border crossing any of us have ever had. Our thoughts of being stopped for unknown security reasons because our stinky shorts, shirts and runners were going to set off the Bio Hazard alarms were immediately quelled as we breezed through customs. I think the wind must have been blowing in our favour .
We even got one last “good luck” from two fellow Canadians who’d seen us on TV in Halifax and caught up to us as we were crossing the bridge towards the border. Hoots and cheers of congratulations were coming from every car as we proudly ran in front of the 4,444 miles pasted on the front of the E-volution RV with Vanessa and Simon filming the magic moment!
Passports checked, questions answered, and we were off running through the state of Maine, to our destination, Bar Harbor, to participate in the Mount Desert Island Marathon (the Big Surr of The East). Race director Gary Allen welcomed us in like old friends (could be a “Groundhog Day” happening here with repeat moments of kindness).
The course did not disappoint it’s name, as Steph and I ran through some of the most incredible scenery and continued meeting amazing people who really got what we are doing and offered encouragement and other opportunities to connect along our route (did I mention we’re now running SOUTH all the way to Florida? ) with introductions to friends and associates.
On October 20th we said a “teary-happy-see-ya-soon” good bye to our amazing 1st Road Manger, V, Vanilla, Vanessa the beautiful! She is most likely (and we hope) sleeping today to catch up from the last 5 ½ months. We love you V and are sooooo pumped for your next adventure. Thank you for sharing your brilliance, your dedication and ability to just “roll baby roll” with the ever changing Run for One Planet action! We seriously couldn’t have done any of it without you.
We had an incredible event with Cathy Lewis at Peninsula Elementary School yesterday and met another eyes-wide-open group of kids who taught us a few things with their knowledge and understanding of the Planet and our interconnectedness. Thanks Cathy, for being another “local hero”.
Our 1st events in America and amazing time in Bar Harbor ended last night with a scrumptious organic dinner and intimate speaking session at College of the Atlantic – the first carbon neutral university of the US! Thanks Tonia for setting us up. We had a blast!
If Bar Harbor is any indication of what kind of reception we’ll have as we run and speak around America, our tour to inspire Action for our Planet looks to be starting off with a bang.
