One of my favorite U2 songs plays in my head as we sit for yet another day of waiting at Roger’s Pass from a snow and mudslide to be cleared away. We are gnawing to run and continue our mission to inspire Action! Running is our vehicle and right now, we are forced to stop, in our vehicle (the Eco Mothership) because of what the highways worker says is a mudslide twice as big as last year and only 4 days into melt season “caused by the last few years of erratic weather here in the mountains of British Columbia”. It makes me think about what is happening on a global scale when a worker who spends many years working an intimate section of mountain road tells me, “the weather in these mountains are changing”. What is truly happening to other parts of our Planet to validate this sentiment?
I am not a climate scientist, an expert on weather, or an expert on most things. I am however, a concerned citizen of the world trying to find out the truth behind the fact and fiction of all we’re hearing on the news, where the state of our Earth is concerned. I take the belief of the many hundreds of scientists who’s sole purpose for the work they do is to uncover the scientific facts before they state their findings and suggestions to the rest of us, the masses.
Even if our climate and all the changes in weather patterns, ocean currents and surface temperatures aren’t being caused by humans, global warming, global cooling or any other global occurrence, isn’t it in our best interest to take a little less, clean it up a bit more and leave it better than how we found it? Like I said, I’m not a scientist and even I know that we are taking way more from this earth than we can sustain for much longer.
I wonder if the question isn’t, is global warming happening and is it caused by human activity?
Maybe it’s, if we only have one Planet Earth (at last check we do) wouldn’t we be asking ourselves how we can take better care of her so we always have a great place to call home?
I’m pretty partial to this place near the sun. I want to do all I can to have a full life and still leave enough for all after I’m gone. Too simple some might say. That’s ok because I personally believe there are many who feel the same and part of my mission out on the road this year is to connect with these people who feel the same as I and are doing things in their particular piece of tera firma along our route.
I invite you to come and join our run tour either as a runner or as an eager supporter for change through personal Action.
Take the Environmental Action Challenge and commit to just 1 new action for our amazing Planet! Imagine if your action had the power to change the world? Steph, our crew, our home team and I know it can.
Now, close your eyes and see yourself choosing 1 new action you’re going to take for your Planet. Now, see your action spreading to your circle of family and friends. Now, see these actions spreading out all around North America so you can see this one singular step you’ve taken gets replicated 333 million times. Pretty powerful, your 1 action is.
Act Now.
So long from the mothership from roadside in the most breathtaking beautiful scenery I’ve ever run through. Cross your fingers we get through tomorrow (Monday, May 19th) and we’ll see you on the road somewhere soon
